Kidney Stones

Comprehensive treatment for Kidney stones:

Patients with small asymptomatic stones in the kidney usually do not require any procedure. Medication and dietary advice are given for the expulsion of the stones.

Stones which require procedure are removed by advanced endourology technique. The treatment of kidney stones depends on the size, location and density of the stone.

Stones larger than 2cm are usually removed by PCNL procedure (Percutaneous nephrolithotripsy).

Treatment of Stones less than 2cm depends on their location and hardness.

ESWL (Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy) is a non-invasive technique recommended for small and not so hard stones in the upper and midpole region of the kidney.

RIRS(retrograde intrarenal surgery) is a new modality wherein kidney stones of varying hardness are powdered by Laser. In this procedure a thin flexible endoscope is passed through the urinary passage up into the kidney. The flexible endoscope can be negotiated to any location in the kidney and the stone can be made into dust with the help of laser.

Ureteric Stones:

Stones in the ureter can cause excruciating pain. The treatment again depends on the size and location of stone.

Stones less than 6mm are treated by medical expulsive therapy. In this patients are advised to take certain tablets for spontaneous  expulsion of the stones.

Larger Stones in the ureter usually require intervention. Ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy (URSL) is recommended for these patients.

Recurrent stone formers:

Patients with kidney stone disease are evaluated at regular intervals to prevent stone recurrence. A thorough metabolic evaluation is performed for recurrent stone formers. It includes stone analysis, blood chemistry and 24-hour urine analysis.

We aim to achieve a complete stone free status in all our patients.
